Electric Motors

ESP working in partnership with Bruntons, INSEAN, STEYR MOTORS and Homewood Products

  • To adapt PMDC motor technology to higher-powered (15-20 kW) parallel hybrid applications
  • To integrate PMDC motor technology with best-in-class marine diesel engines to create 16-32 kW generators optimized for marine serial hybrid applications
  • To develop a dynamic motor controller for the electric propulsion motor capable of optimizing efficiency based on propeller curves
  • To develop a dynamic throttle that responds in an appropriate manner to changing sea states and propeller loads
  • To integrate motors and generators into the EMM
  • To develop control algorithms to match motor and propeller
  • To produce a detailed design specification for 60 and 120 kW PMDC motors
  • To determine the feasibility of installing a PMDC motor in a sailing boat keel
  • To produce a design specification and prototype motor for a rim drive propulsor
  • To assist with the installation and calibration of test systems in test boat
  • To develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for electric motor and generator testing for various operating conditions, and implement.
